ஒரு கையில் லேப்டாப்பை தட்டிக்கொண்டே மறு கையில் டீயை குடித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார் ரகு. “I have brought a collection of _____ Award winning books of this year” எந்த ஆர்டிக்கிள் (a, an or the) வரும் சார்?” என்றபடியே ரகுவை நோக்கி வந்தான் ரவி. அதற்கு ரகு “the” என்று வரும் என்றார். “அதெப்படிங்க சார்… அவார்டுல முதலெழுத்து “அ”தானே. அப்படின்னா “an” தானே வரணும்” என்றான்.

உடனே, “அப்படியில்ல ரவி. முழுக்கப் படிச்சுப் பார். a collection of ___ Award winning books….. இங்க books என்ற plural-க்கு ‘the’ என்ற ஆர்டிக்கிள் போடணுமே தவிர award என்ற வார்த்தைக்கு அல்ல. புரிகிறதா?” என்றார் ரகு. சற்று குழப்பத்துடன் பார்த்தான் ரவி.

“என்ன ரவி? புரியலயா?... சரி. இந்த வாக்கியங்களைப் பார். நல்லாவே புரியும். 1) I have brought an award. (ஒரு அவார்டு), 2) This is an award winning book. (ஒரு அவார்டு), 3) This is the award that he got yesterday. (நேற்று வாங்கினானே அந்த அவார்டு), 4) This is one of the award winning books.” (அவார்டு பெற்ற புத்தகங்கள்)” என்றார் ரகு.

சற்று நிதானமாக படித்துப் பார்த்த ரவி “அட்டகாசம் சார். இப்ப புரியுது” என்றான். “the” என்ற சுட்டிடை எங்கெங்கல்லாம் வராது தெரியுமா? “1) Before Proper and Abstract Nouns வராது. (TheKannadasan was a poet. The Gold is a costly metal). எங்க இதுக்கு ஆர்டிகிள்ஸ் போடுங்க பார்க்கலாம்” என்றபடியே ஒரு வாசகத்தைக் கொடுத்தார் ரகு.
