“The teacher, as well as the student, were happy.What is wrong in this statement sir” Akila had asked this question in the last meeting. `as well as’ என்பதும் `and’ என்பதும் ஒரே அர்த்தத்தைத் தருவது போலிருந்தாலும் சப்ஜக்ட் வெர்ப் அக்ரிமென்டில் எதிர் துருவங்களே. (Though ‘as well as’ & ‘and’ seem to convey same meaning, they are quite opposite in ‘subject verb agreement’) அகிலா சொன்ன “The teacher, as well as the student, were happy.” என்ற இந்த வாக்கியத்தில் were என்பதற்குப் பதிலாக was என்ற வினைச்சொல்தான் வர வேண்டும்’’ என்று அகிலாவையும் ரவியையும் பார்த்து விளக்கிய ரகு மேலும் தொடர்ந்தார்.

(When two subjects are joined by as well as, the verb agrees in number and person with the first one.) ‘‘as well as என்பது டீச்சர் மற்றும் ஸ்டூடன்டை இணைக்கிறது. இதுபோன்று இணைக்கும்போது, வினைச்சொல் as well as க்கு முன் வந்துள்ள சப்ஜெக்ட்டைப் பொறுத்துதான் அமையும். இங்கு டீச்சர் என்பதுதான் சப்ஜக்ட்.  டீச்சர் என்பது third person singular. எனவே, அதற்கு இணையான was என்ற singular verb வருமே தவிர, were என்ற  plural verb வராது. எனவே, The teacher, as well as the student, was happy என்றுதான் வரமுடியும்.

‘as well as’ க்கு முன் வந்துள்ள சப்ஜெக்ட் ஒருமையாக இருந்தால்  வெர்ப்பும்  ஒருமையாக வரவேண்டும். சப்ஜெக்ட் பன்மையாக இருந்தால் வெர்ப்பும் பன்மையாக வரவேண்டும். உதாரணம்: 1. The teacher, as well as the student was happy. 2. The Teachers, as well as the student, were happy. ஆனால், “and” என்பது இதற்கு மாறானது. 3. The teacher and the student were happy. 4. The teachers and the student were happy.

எனவே, as well as வந்திருந்தால் அதற்கு முன் வந்துள்ள சப்ஜெக்ட்டைப் பொறுத்துதான் நாம் வினைச்சொல்லைப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும். Got it?” என்ற ரகுவை இருவரும் புன்னகையுடன் பார்த்தனர். “Nice explanation sir, by the by, ‘The shop, with its articles, was burnt down or were burnt down. Which is correct sir?” asked Ravi.
