Usage of ‘together with’

‘The shop with its articles was burnt down or were burnt down. Which is correct sir?’ asked  Ravi. “ Good question Ravi. You see, when a SINGULAR noun or pronoun is connected with another  noun or pronoun by using words like with, as well as, besides, together with, no less than and  other similar expressions, the verb should be SINGULAR.

இங்கு shop என்பது singular noun. எனவே was burnt down என்று தான் வருமே தவிர, were burnt down என்று வராது. கடை  அதன் பொருட்களுடன் எரிந்தது என்றுதான் சொல்ல முடியுமே தவிர ‘எரிந்தன’ என்று சொல்ல முடியாது. இன்னும் பல உதாரணங்கள் சொல்லலாம்.  1) The ship with its crew members was saved. 2) Silver as well as gold is a precious metal. 3)  Raju, as well as his sons is industrious. 4) No one besides Jagan tells the truth. 5) Prathap  with his friends was present there.

அதே சமயம் with, as well as, besides, together with, no less than and other similar expressions  போன்ற இணைப்புச் சொற்களுக்கு முன் ஒரு PLURAL noun or pronoun வந்து விட்டால் the verb should be PLURAL. 1) The  crew members with the ship were saved. 2) Sam’s sons as well as Sam are industrious.

எனவே மேற்கூறப்பட்டுள்ள இணைப்புச் சொற்கள் வரும்போது நாம் மனதில் < ஐ நினைவுகொள்ள வேண்டும்’’ என்றார் ரகு. உடனே,“ ‘Neither  the girls have brought the book.’ Is it a correct sentence sir?” asked Akila.
